Thoughts #4: A Good Place To Read

Imagine you’re on a worn but comfortable chair or sofa as you read your book, a blanket adding a little extra warmth over your shoulders. It’s a dark night and there’s a gentle rhythmic patter of rain against the window. You’re reading, and if it’s a large heavy book perhaps you’ve got it propped up on your knee. There’s a hot cup of…

…tea, perhaps black or perhaps herbal, and you can see the thin wispy vapours thread through the air above it.

Or maybe you’re sitting on a chair at a cafe window on a bright day and you raise your eyes from the page to watch the people go by. Going to and fro, they are hurried and contrast sharply with the slow pace at which you’ve decided to take things here. Perhaps there’s a coffee on the table in front of you which you reach a gentle hand out to in order to take a sip.

Or the library reading area with it’s dark wooden tables? Or a park bench where ducks and pigeons like to hang out? Where do you like to read?

We all have our ideal and it means something different to all of us.

The place we do our reading is like a frame, and the image we build in our heads as we read is like the picture. The scenery, the frame in which we read, is not a pre-requisite at all as long as we are comfortable, but doesn’t it enrich the experience when your eyes dart up from the page and see it for just a moment?
