Thoughts #3: Books You Can’t Finish – A Muse on DNF’s

I’m a stubborn reader. I like to read a book all the way through from cover to cover to the bitter end but sometimes when you do that it can feel like you’re reading through gritted teeth and relentless forced eye movements across the page. Until recently I could hardly recall books that I had stopped reading half way through, I just put up with it and ploughed through it. And then recently…

…I had two DNF (did not finish) books in a row. Two in a row. I don’t think that had ever happened to me before.

And so I wondered, why do we feel the urge to keep going through a book when we’re not enjoying ourselves, especially when there’s so many others out there to read that we might really like? Sometimes it’s important to remember that we are reading for pleasure and we only have a certain amount of free time during the week for reading. Let’s use that time wisely.
